József Attila Museum, Skansen and Espersit House

Permanent exhibitions of the Attila József Museum in Makó: Strenuous Centuries - The history of the town of Makó; József Galamb and the Ford Model T; Skansen in the Yard: Carpenter, Smith and Cooper Workshops; Espersit House: Makó memories of famous Hungarian poets and authors - Attila József, Gyula Juhász and Ferenc Móra.

The Attila József Museum, the town museum of Makó was renovated in 2008 and now it welcomes its guests in a modern building. One of its exhibitions, titled „Strenuous Centuries” presents 300 years history of Makó. Take a glance into Makó’s past through authentic documents and objects or study the colourful culture of the town from the resettling after the expulsion of the Turkish to the change of regime in 1989. With a working Ford Model T the museum tributes to József Galamb, constructor, a native of Makó. József Pulitzer, the world-famous American newspaper owner is also commemorated with documents about his Makó origin. You are also invited to visit a market from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries titled „Historical Portrait Gallery” (gallery of ancestors, collections).

The Espersit House, the literary exhibition of the museum had been placed in a connected building, where the young poet, Attila József lived during his high school years, helped by his lawyer patron, János Espersit.

The complex of buildings in the museum courtyard is named Skansen. Although it is not an independent open-air ethnographic museum, it is righteously considered a separate unit thanks to its spacious presentation of peasant farms and the rich collection of ethnographic relics.
