Hagymaház Cultural Centre

Onion House, the cultural centre and theatre hall of Makó, is located in the downtown, in Posta street. The organic building with its four towers was designed by Imre Makovecz and is a famous attraction of the city and the region.

Among others, the Onion House incorporates the theatre hall of Makó. Since 2006, a temporary, mobile auditorium is available to be built in front of the amphitheatre. With that, the venue seats 3000 and is the second largest auditorium in Csongrád county.

The building is an outstanding example of organic architecture: its towers embody highly grown plants, the basement resembles roots. Its white walls evoke the traditional farmland houses of the Great Plains.

The theatre hall can be opened from the back, so the stage is visible from the amphitheatre as well. The ceiling above the audience symbolizes the sky.

A café, offices and club rooms, and an upstair podium are also part of the building. The latter gives home to Imre Kocsis’s large scale painting, ”Wedding Feast”.

The mission of the building has been best formulated by Imre Makovecz:

„I wish all citizens of Makó to regard this building as their own intellectual property.”
